Friday, May 19, 2000 - Second Round
TUCSON--Nebraska (51-19) banged out 14 hits to whip South Carolina, 11-1, and earn a berth in the NCAA Region 2 softball semifinal.
The Cornhuskers will play host and top-seeded Arizona at 2:30 p.m. Saturday. South Carolina (40-27) will play Illinois State in an elimination game at 5 p.m., with the winner of that game to meet the loser of the NU-Arizona game in another elimination game at 7:30 p.m. Amanda Bucholz' two-run home run punctuated a three-run fourth for the Cornhuskers. Jenifer Williams doubled with one out and scored on Jill Baker's ground ball, before Buchholz line drive over the left field fence knocked USC starter Megan Matthews from the game.
NU stretched the lead to 6-0 in the fifth on a bases-clearing double by Leigh Suhr, who was thrown out at third trying to advance on the throw to the plate.
South Carolina scored in the fifth on a run-scoring single by Jodi Fittro. Nebraska pitcher Jennie Voss (22-9) had held USC to one hit before the Lady Gamecocks collected three in that frame. She finished with a four-hitter.
Nebraska batted around in a five-run sixth. The game ended on the mercy
rule after USC batted in the bottom of the inning.
