Tyler is the only Wildcat at par or better on opening day

TUCSON , Ariz. ?C The University of Arizona menˇ?s golf team shot a 10-over-par 290 Wednesday to stand in 24th place at the 2007 NCAA Championships at Golden Horseshoe Golf Course in Williamsburg, Va.

Arizonaˇ?s 10-over day gave the team possession of 24th place in the 30-team field. ?It was UAˇ?s highest team score in relation to par in its last 15 rounds played dating back to March.? Stanford topped the field with a five-under total of 275.? The Cardinal currently are two strokes ahead of Coastal Carolina (277), while Florida, Minnesota and Texas (278) rounded out the top three places.

Three UA players were making their first NCAA Championships appearance Wednesday, and those three players, Nathan Tyler , Pedro Oriol and Josh Wilks were the Catsˇ? top three finishers Wednesday.? Of Arizonaˇ?s 18 career rounds of NCAA Championship experience, 11 belong to senior Josh Esler and seven belong to senior Brian Prouty .

The Wildcats were led Wednesday by senior Nathan Tyler , who carded an even-par 70 in his first career round at the NCAA Championships.? The Tucson, Ariz., is tied with 21 other golfers for 29th place after the first 18 holes.? Stanfordˇ?s Rob Grube grabbed the individual lead with a six-under 64.

Two other Wildcats were three strokes behind Tyler after a first round 73 (+3).? Freshman Oriol and senior Wilks are knotted in 89th place heading into Thursdayˇ?s second round.

Esler is tied for 107th place after shooting a four-over 74, while Prouty is in 144th place at seven-over 77.

The 72-hole NCAA Championships continue through Saturday at Golden Horseshoe Golf Courseˇ?s Gold Course, a par 70, 6,803-yard layout.? Arizona is making its 21st consecutive appearance in the national championship event, which is the second-longest active streak in the nation.
