OJAI, Calif. ?- The No. 51 Arizona men’s tennis team completed the first and second rounds of the Pac-10 Championships, Thursday, April 21. Arizona was unable to win any matches in Main Draw play, while three freshmen were able to take wins in first round play of the Invitational Draw.
In the main draw of the competition, the Wildcats top four players had a tough day, losing their four matches to some tough opponents. Beginning action on the day, at a bright and early start time of 8 a.m., redshirt freshman Jason Labrosse fell in a tough match to No. 16 Sven Swinnen of the University of Oregon, 6-3, 7-6. Soon after, No. 48 junior Roger Matalonga was unable to complete his match with No. 70 James Wan of Stanford, after being ahead in the match, 6-2, 0-3, before being forced to withdraw due to injury. With a 11 a.m. start time, senior Colin O'Grady fell in a tough match to No. 65 Kris Kwinta of UCLA, 6-4, 6-4. Rounding out competition in the Main Draw, for the Wildcats, junior Daniel Andrus fell to No. 117 Andy Colombo of Arizona State, 7-5, 6-2.
In the invitational rounds, the trio of freshmen, Claudio Christen, Bruno Alcala, and Francois Vandermerwe, we’re all able to gain first round wins to advance on into the second round on the day. Junior Tim Mullane, however, had a tougher day falling to Phil Kao of Stanford, 6-1, 6-0. Turning momentum for the wildcats, Christen defeated Stanford’s Eric Mckean, 6-4, 6-1. A little later in the morning, Alcala was able to easily defeat Bruce Aiken of USC, 6-0, 6-2. Last but not least, the final match for the Wildcats in the first round was Vandermerwe’s defeat of Jeremy Drean from UCLA, 7-6, 6-2.
In the second round of the Invitational, Christen continued his winning ways defeating Ryan McBride of Arizona State, 6-3, 2-6, 7-6. Warkentin is set to face Ken Nakahara of Cal, Friday at 12:00 p.m. in the quarterfinals of the Invitational rounds. Vandermerwe had a slightly tougher time in the round of 16, as he fell to Tyler Browne of Cal, 6-3, 6-2. Finishing out the day, Alcala fell to a tough Pete Scharler of Washington, 6-3, 6-3.
The Wildcats will hit the courts again tomorrow, Friday, April 22, in the doubles portion of the competition, as well as continue singles play.
