Tucson, Ariz. (Jan. 23) -- In conjunction with the celebration of National Girls & Women in Sports Day, Arizona governor Janet Napolitano will be a "guest coach" at an upcoming University of Arizona women's basketball game, announced head coach Joan Bonvicini on Friday. The governor will be a guest on the Wildcat bench at the home game against California on Saturday, Feb. 7, in the McKale Center.
The festivities surrounding National Girls & Women in Sports Day will include an all-sport youth clinic conducted by female student-athletes from several UA teams; halftime recognition of female youth sports teams in attendance; and a post-game autograph session with the Wildcats. The weekend will also feature a reunion for all former UA women's basketball players, with an Alumni Game being played in McKale Center at 10 a.m. on Feb. 7.
As a guest coach, Governor Napolitano will sit on the Arizona bench during the game and will be in the locker room with the team both before and after the contest. She will also serve as the honorary Master of Ceremonies for the halftime celebration of National Girls & Women in Sports Day.
Napolitano previously served as a guest coach last season during the Cats' 80-50 blowout of Washington State on Feb. 8, 2003.
"We're pleased about Governor Napolitano's continued interest in our program and in women in sports," said Bonvicini, who is in her 13th season at the helm of the Wildcat program. "We appreciate her taking the time from her busy schedule and will be honored to have her here again."
"It's great to be a guest coach with the Wildcats again. We beat Washington State by 30 points last time, so I hope to bring the same good luck this year against California," said Napolitano. "Coach Bonvicini has a team of remarkable young women. They are standout students, as well as great athletes, and I'm pleased to join them in McKale Center again."
The game is scheduled to tip at 4 p.m. on Feb. 7, and plenty of tickets are still available by calling the UA Athletics Ticket Office at 1-800-452-2287.
