LA QUINTA, Calif. – Two of Arizona’s four newcomers kicked off the Wildcat’s 2011 season Friday and Saturday at the National Collegiate Tennis Classic. Freshmen Kieren Thompson and Andre Vidaller squared off for the first time as Wildcats in singles and doubles competition at the event known as “The Wimbledon of College Tennis” at La Quinta Resort & Club.

“The guys got some valuable experience playing in a very high level event,” said head coach Tad Berkowitz. “I am very impressed that Andre made the Semifinals of his first collegiate tournament.”

On Friday, Vidaller powered his way through the first round of singles competition after receiving a bye. The 5-9 freshman breezed past Pepperdine’s Alex Moreno 6-3, 6-0 to advance to the quarterfinals. On Saturday, Vidaller secured a spot in the semifinals after he edged out Alfredo Moreno of Pepperdine 7-6, 6-3 to win the match. In the semifinals, the Santos, Brazil native fell in straight sets, 6-0, 6-3, to the University of North Carolina’s Jose Hernandez.

Thompson, a 5-11 native of Brisbane, Australia also received a bye in the first round on Friday, but fell in the round of 16 to Nathan Sereke of Boise State in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5. On Saturday, Thompson roared through a three-set tiebreaker with Cal Poly’s Alex Sonesson in the second round of consolation matches. The freshman took the first set 6-2, dropped the second 1-6, before clinching the 10-3 win. In the semifinals, Thompson fell 6-1, 6-2 to Andre Dome of Cal Poly.

Vidaller and Thompson teamed up in doubles action on Friday where they faced Boise State’s Jeff Mullen and Sereke in the second round after receiving a bye. The duo fell 8-2 and fell into the second round of the consolation bracket. The pair fell to Marco Comuzzo and Dome of Cal Poly.

The two will return back to Tucson now with having some collegiate experience playing against some of the country’s top players and will prepare with the rest of the 2011 Wildcats for their first dual match of the season Saturday, Jan. 22 against UC Riverside. Play begins at 11 a.m. at the LaNelle Robson Tennis Center.
