LAS CRUCES, N. M. – The University of Arizona men’s tennis team sent three players to compete in the Aggie Invitational this weekend in Las Cruces, N.M.
In the opening round draws, Francois Van der Merwe topped Jaco Visagie of Northern Arizona, 6-2, 6-2. Van der Merwe then went on to lose to Abeline Christian’s Juan Nunez, 6-4, 6-4.
Sophomore David Humphreys had a tough three-set match versus Monterrey Tech’s David Villarreal in which he ended up losing, 6-3, 5-7, 6-2. Humphreys would bounce back though, and beat Luke Hawk of Abeline Christian, 6-3, 6-3, in consolations.
Pat Metham took on Northern Arizona’s Jake Tracy after a first round bye. Metham jumped on Tracy early and sealed the win with a 6-0, 6-3 victory to advance to the quarterfinals of the Crimson bracket.
In doubles action, Metham and Van der Merwe beat NAU’s Chris Arena and Jaco Visagie, 8-6. The duo then lost to Alex DeMucha and David Villarreal, 8-6.
David Humphreys teamed with freshman John Harden to compete in doubles, but lost to Eduardo Salas and Roman Stoisavljevic.
All three Cats will be in action tomorrow with Metham remaining in the main Draw for singles. Metham and Van der Merwe also will compete in the main draw for doubles.
“I thought our guys competed well out there today,” said head coach Tad Berkowitz. “I expect them to come out tomorrow and play with the same type of effort they showed today.”
Meanwhile, accompanied by Assistant Coach Tom Lloyd, Andres Arango is competing in the prestigious Costa Mesa Futures Tournament in Costa Mesa, Calif. In his first match as a Wildcat, Arango topped Sidney Jim, 6-4, 6-2, to advance into tomorrow’s play.
“This tournament is always loaded with such great talent,” said Lloyd. “He (Arango) played great today and got the win. Now we’ll focus on resting up and preparing for tomorrow.”
Both tournaments will continue through the rest of the weekend.
