MONTGOMERY, Ala. -
Arizona Women’s Tennis blanked No. 58 Illinois on Sunday at the Blue-Gray Classic, taking the match 4-0 in the Wildcats’ last match of the tournament.
Arizona fought back after winning Saturday’s first match against SMU, but falling later in the day to No. 12 Virginia.
“I am very pleased with todays’ result,” Arizona head coach Vicky Maes said. “I was a little worried after yesterday, but our team really stepped up to the challenge. Illinois is a very good team and we knew we were going to have to play much better to win.”
The Wildcats secured the doubles point after sophomore Lacey Smyth (Oceanside, Calif.) and senior Natasha Marks (Nottingham, England) won at the No. 1 spot and sophomores Kim Stubbe (Mol, Belgium) and Susan McRann (Dublin, Ireland) won at No. 3.
The team kept its momentum up in singles play, as Smyth, Marks and McRann all earned wins and locked in the team victory.
“After securing the doubles point, we kept our momentum going,” Maes said. “While Kim, Sarah (Landsman), and Laura (Oldham) didn’t get to finish, it was great to see Lacey, Tash and Susan play so intensely and finish quickly.”
Arizona will return to Robson Tennis Center on Saturday, March 3 at 11 a.m. to take on No. 43 Sacramento State and Sunday, March 4 at 11 a.m. to take on No. 34 Saint Mary’s.
