TULSA, Okla. ?- It was a rough day for the University of Arizona men’s tennis team. Both of its remaining singles players lost their opening matches of the qualifying round at the Polo Ralph Lauren All-American Championship.

Arizona sophomore Peter Zimmer made it into the qualifying draw after a straight set victory over Troy University’s Irving Morales in the final round of pre-qualifying yesterday. Matched up against Louisville’s Damar Johnson, Zimmer played well winning the first set 6-4. A close second set tie breaker won by Johnson then evened the match at one set. The difference in the third set was one service break, won by Johnson 6-3.

Junior Claudio Christen made an early exit from the singles tournament as well with a 6-3, 6-3 loss to Baylor’s Denes Lukacs.

Despite the losses, Zimmer and Christen are not finished. They will be competing together in the doubles tournament, which begins tomorrow. The Arizona duo is seeded ninth and will be playing against Lenny Gullan and David Stone from the University of North Carolina. Christen will also be competing in the consolation draw tomorrow afternoon against Robbert Lathouwers, a senior representing Auburn.
