LONG BEACH, Calif.- The Arizona women's soccer team dropped their opening match on Friday, in a 1-2 loss to the 18th-ranked Long Beach State 49ers at George Allen field in Long Beach, Calif.
Arizona (0-1) came out very aggressive in the first half collecting six of its nine shots in the game. Junior forward Jazmin Ponce had an opportunity in the middle of the first half on a penalty kick, but her shot was saved by Long Beach State goalkeeper Marrina Meyers.
Long Beach State (1-0) registered the first goal in the 45th minute when Alex Balcer scored on a free kick. Ponce redeemed herself in the 56th minute with Arizona's first goal of the season. She was assisted by Emily Lai and Jessica Culver.
The game remained tied through regulation, before Ashley Roese scored in the 94th minute to record the game-winner for the 49ers.
"We played really well," head coach Lisa Oyen said. "The goal is to win but there are a lot of positives to take from this performance."
In her first Arizona start, goalkeeper Gabby Kaufman recorded six saves. She was one of six Wildcats that played the full 93 minutes, including Mykaylin Rosenquist, Ariel Boulicault, Kirstyn Magyar, Shannon Heinzler and Sheridan Cohen. Olympian Ana-Maria Montoya started and played 41 minutes for the Wildcats.
"It was a good opening game for us," Oyen added. "I think people are going to be pleasantly surprised with how much we have improved from last year."
Arizona will open its home schedule on Thursday, August 23, against BYU at Murphey Field at Mulcahy Soccer Stadium. The match is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m.
