TUCSON, Ariz. ?- The 22nd-ranked Arizona women’s soccer team (9-4-3, 4-1-1 Pac-10) defeated the 21st-ranked Stanford Cardinal (8-5-2, 2-2-1 Pac-10), 2-1.

Senior Mallory Miller scored the first goal at 19:51 with a penalty kick. Arizona posted 11 shots in the first half, while Stanford posted eight.

Stanford’s Kate Mannino tied the game with a goal off of a pass from Lizzy George in the 56th minute. Miller scored her second goal of the afternoon, 17th of the season, in the 79th minute. The goal was a result of a free kick caused by a Stanford hand ball.

Arizona goalkeeper McCall Smith allowed one goal off of 11 shots on goal, while Stanford’s Erica Holland allowed two goals off of nine shots on goal.

Head coach Dan Tobias served the second game of his two-game suspension coming as a result of a red card in the Washington State game on Oct. 14.

“It was an awesome win,” assistant coach Harold Warren said. “The Pac-10 is very tough. We played very well today. We did have some lulls, but that happens in soccer. I think we made our U of A fans proud.”

“The team worked exceptionally hard today,” assistant coach Lisa Oyen said. “Stanford is a good team. We are pleased about how the team performed. We’re excited about moving on in Pac-10 play and are looking forward to seeing the fans out on Saturday night.”

The Wildcats will remain at home to take on Arizona State in their final regular season home game. Arizona will take on the Sun Devils on Saturday, Oct. 29. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. at Murphey Field at Lohse Stadium.
