Arizona Leads John A. Burns Intercollegiate

TUCSON, Ariz.- Arizona used a 12 under first round to grab the lead in the John A. Burns Intercollegiate. Arizona, who has two players in the top five, has a one stroke advantage over New Mexico.

This is the second consecutive tournament that the Cats have lead following the first round. Arizona's JV lead the Cactus Thaw heading into the second day, but eventually finished second to host Western New Mexico. The Cactus Thaw was a two round event, The John A. Burns Intercollegiate is a three round event.

Tarquin MacManus leads the 95 other competitors. MacManus' 64 tied his low round on the season. At eight under par, MacManus holds a two stoke lead over Jay Myers of San Jose State and Jordan Hammer of BYU. Hammer is playing as an individual. There's a four way tie for fourth place, including Arizona's Tyler Neal.

One stroke behind Arizona's 276 is New Mexico, who shot 11 under for the day. New Mexico is lead by John Sauer who is tied for eighth place. Arkansas is in third place at eight under. BYU finished the first day in fourth. Defending champion Auburn shot a 283 to put them in fifth place.

Arizona has three golfers under par. Tarquin MacManus will look to earn his first collegiate victory, and holds a two shot cushion heading into the second round. Tyler Neal shot a 67, tying him for fourth place. The third Wildcat under par is sophomore Jonathon Khan. Khan's 71 put him in a tie for 32nd. Brad Nicholson is tied for 53rd. Rich Saferian's round one was the highest of the team's score and therefore was not counted in Arizona's 276 first round total. He shot a 75 in the first round.

The John A. Burns Intercollegiate is contested at the Leilehua Golf Course in Wahiawa, Haw., a par 72, 6,916 yard layout.
