TUCSON - Stanford's Dana Sorensen threw a two-hitter to pace the ninth-ranked Cardinal (39-13, 10-5) to a 2-1 victory over No. 1 Arizona (48-3, 12-2), keeping SU in second place in the Pac-10.

The Cardinal touched up UA ace Alicia Hollowell (35-2) for 12 hits, the most she allowed in 86 pitching appearances spanning two years. She allowed 11 against California April 20, 2003, in a 7-5 UA victory.

The loss was the first at home for UA since No. 8 Washington won, 7-1, on May 10 last year. A seventh-inning home run by Samantha Quintero averted a second shutout in 51 games this year.

Stanford could have blown the game open with another key hit or two. The Cardinal stranded 13 runners. UA stranded five.

Sorensen (25-7) held UA to its fewest hits of the year, matching a two-hit performance her teammate, Laura Severson, pinned on the Cats Feb. 27, though UA won 2-1 in that non-conference game during UA's Worth Wildcat Invitational in Tucson. Sorensen struck out seven, including two before Quintero's home run and pinch-hitter Candace Abrams to end the game in the seventh.

Stanford took the lead in the top of the second with successive singles by Lauren Lappin and Jessica Allister, and an RBI single by Leah Nelson.

The Cardinal staged another rally in the third, with a hit by Jackie Rinehart and Heather Shook, and a wild pitch on a third strike to move both into scoring position with one out. Hollowell intentionally walked Lappin to set up a play at any base, got Allister to pop out and struck out Nelson to strand three runners.

Stanford loaded the bases again in the fourth with three hits, but again Hollowell came up with a key strikeout to end the inning. Stanford stranded eight runners through four innings.

Wendy Allen and Mackenzi Vandergeest walked to lead off the Arizona fourth and put the tying run in scoring position, but Sorensen got a fly ball from Kristie Fox and struck out pinch-hitter Erin Palomarez. Jackie Coburn drew a walk to load the bases, but got a foul pop from Samantha Quintero to

Stanford loaded the bases again in the fifth, and this time cashed in. Allister doubled, Nelson waked, and Sickler got an infield hit. Katherine Hoffman hit a roller to Hollowell, who misplayed it for an error, allowing Allister to score.
