Arizona Tied for 13th After Shooting Second-Round 290 at NCAA Championships

COLUMBUS, Ohio-Arizona carded a second-round of 6-over-par 290 Thursday and slipped into a tie for 13th place at the 2002 NCAA Men's Golf Championships at the Ohio State University Scarlet Course. Chris Nallen turned in the best individual performance for the Wildcats as he shot his second-straight subpar round to position himself in a tie for fourth place at 5-under-par 137.

Clemson and Georgia Tech share the tournament lead as both squads sit at 5-under-par 563 for the tournament. Toledo is in third place at 564 (-4), while North Carolina, Texas Christian and Texas are all tied for fourth place at 2-under-par. Individually, Brock Mackenzie of Washington holds the tournament lead at 7-under-par after a second-round 69 (-2). Dustin Bray of North Carolina and Adam Rubinson of Texas Christian are tied for second place.

Despite being in 13th place, Arizona trails the tournament leaders by just nine strokes with two rounds remaining in the 72-hole tournament. The Wildcats' two-day total is 4-over-par 572.

Nallen, a 5-foot-11-inch sophomore from Blairstown, N.J., began the second round with a roaring start as he made birdies on four of his first five holes of the day. The highest-rated golfer in the Wildcat lineup, Nallen closed his round with 10 pars and one more birdie to finish the day with a score of 3-under-par 68.

Ricky Barnes, a junior from Stockton, Calif., matched his opening-round performance as he carded another round of even-par 71. He stands tied for 36th place with a two-day total of 142. Junior Reid Hatley is tied for 75th after he posted a second-round 75. Hatley sits at 3-over-par 145 for the tournament.

Rounding out the Arizona lineup are freshman Kipp Riehle and sophomore Andy Connell. Riehle is tied for 119th place with a 36-hole score of 6-over-par 148. Connell is one stroke back of Riehle in a tie for 132nd place. Connell, a sophomore from Denver, Colo., shot a second-round 76 to put himself at 7-over-par for the tournament.

Action at the 2002 NCAA Championships continues Friday with the third round getting underway at 7:00 a.m. CDT. Arizona tees off from the tenth tee, starting at 7:18 a.m. The Wildcats will play with Augusta State and Pepperdine in Friday's third round.
