WALNUT CREEK, Calif. ?- Arizona junior John Meloan has been named the Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week, commissioner Tom Hansen announced today. The honor marks the second straight week a Wildcat hurler has garnered the award and 31st time overall.
Meloan, from Houston, Texas, pitched UA to a 1-0 shutout victory over defending national champion Cal State Fullerton at Goodwin Field in Southern California on March 18. The right-hander limited the No. 2-ranked Titans to just four hits over 7 2/3 innings with five strikeouts and four walks. The performance handed CSF ace Rickey Romero (5-1) his first loss of the year while improving Meloan to 4-0 on the season and pushing his winning streak when factoring in a decision to 14-0 dating back to last year.
Meloan, who was named the winner of the weekly award for the first time in his career, joins teammate Mark Melancon as the two Wildcats pitchers of the week this season. Melancon was recognized by the conference last week. Washington State’s Jay Miller was named the Pac-10's top player this week.
Meloan and the No. 13-ranked Wildcats will open Pac-10 play this week as Washington travels to Tucson for a three-game series at Kindall Field at Sancet Stadium this Thursday-Saturday. Game time for the series opener on Thursday is set for 7 p.m. MST. Meloan is the scheduled starter in the opener for the Wildcats.
