TUCSON, Ariz. - The Red Team, comprised of reserves and alumni, defeated the Blue Team, comprised of starters, 5-0 in the annual Red-Blue Match at McKale Center this afternoon.
Freshman Whitney Dosty led the Blue Team with 14 kills, followed by sophomore Brooke Buringrud with 13 kills and nine digs. Senior Kristina Baum added 11 kills. Dosty and junior Dominique Lamb each notched five blocks, as the Blue Team out-blocked the Red Team 12 to 11. It was the only team statistic in which the Blue Team bettered the Red Team.
Junior Amy Dyck, who split time on both teams, finished with 51 assists, while freshman Ashley Hamilton, playing three games for the Red Team and one with the Blue Team, dished out 43. Senior Stephanie Butkus tallied 10 assists in two games. Katie Jackels led the team with 17 digs, while Brittany Leonard had 14.
"It went okay," Head Coach David Rubio said. "This year is going to be filled with ups and downs. We have a lot of young players who have not played a lot before. There were some really bright spots. We're just not that consistent right now."
"We have certainly gotten better," he continued. "I haven't been in this position in a very long time (with so many starting spots not filled). Setting is the one position we really need to get better at and that will help everything else."
The team kicks off the season next weekend with the Four Points Sheraton Arizona Invitational, Aug. 25-26, at McKale. For the complete season schedule, click here.
