TUCSON, Ariz. - The University of Arizona Wildcat women's soccer squad wrapped the first weekend of the season with a 2-0 loss to Pepperdine on Sunday.
Junior Renae Cuellar and sophomore Jazmin Ponce led Arizona (0-2, 0-0 Pac-12) with three shot attempts each, two of which were on-goal tries for the forwards. Juniors Kirstyn Magyar and Kristin Strother, sophomore Ana-Maria Montoya, and freshman Julia Glanz, who earned her first start as a Wildcat, also added on-goal attempts for a total of eight on the day.
In the first half, the Wildcats outshot Pepperdine (2-0, 0-0, WCC) 8-6, and on the day edged the Waves on corner kicks 3-2.
"Their first goal came from a defensive mistake on our part, but I was glad to see that we did out-shoot them in the first half," head coach Lisa Oyen said. "In the second half, we came out with less energy, and we let them make more opportunities by the goal than we should have."
In goal, senior Ashley Jettrecorded seven saves with two goals against, one in the 20th minute of action and one of the 53rd.
"We need to work on being more dangerous in front of the goal," Oyen added. "And we have to make more opportunities happen when we're in front of the frame."
Up next, the Wildcats will return to Tucson to open the home schedule against South Carolina on Murphey Field at Mulcahy Stadium on Friday, August 26 at 7 p.m.
