TUCSON, Ariz. - Sophomore forward Ify Ibekwe was rewarded for a stellar week of play by being chosen the U.S. Bank Pac-10 Women's Basketball Player of the Week, announced Monday afternoon by Commissioner Tom Hansen.
Ibekwe averaged 16 points and 12 rebounds in two Arizona victories. She tallied 17 points and 7 rebounds in a 66-58 win over the University of San Diego, then registered 15 points and 17 rebounds en route to a 56-47 triumph over Long Beach State.
A Pac-10 All-Freshman team selection a year ago, Ibekwe is the first Wildcat to earn the weekly award since March 1, 2004 when Shawntinice Polk won the last of her third honors that season. Overall, Arizona has won the award 35 times since its inception with Polk and Adia Barnes leading the way with seven selections each.
Ibekwe is now averaing a team- and Pac-10-leading 11.6 rebounds per game, good enough for #8 in the NCAA. On Sunday against the 49ers, she also tallied four assists, three blocked shots and three steals.
The 17-rebound performance gave Ibekwe five double-doubles in nine contests this season and was the third time in 2008-09 that she has tallied at least 15 boards.
Arizona returns to the floor on Wednesday, December 17 to host UC Riverside with tip-off set for 7:00 p.m.
