Arizona Rises to Top

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. (USA Softball) ?- The University of Arizona remained undefeated at 11-0 and pushed its way past Michigan this week to take the top spot in the ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 Poll, announced today by the Amateur Softball Association. Arizona is one of five schools in the top 25 with a perfect record.

With 17 first-place votes Arizona is No. 1 after going 5-0 at the Worth Wildcat Tournament, allowing only one run and putting up 22 of its own. The Lady Vols of Tennessee turned in 469 points for the No.2 spot after going 5-0 at the Louisville Slugger Classic, including three five-inning games. Only two points behind, 467 pts., is No. 3 UCLA, which shut out then-No.22 Fresno State (2-0, 1-0) this past weekend. Tennessee and UCLA received one and two first-place votes, respectively.

Michigan fell to No. 5 after two losses to Florida, 3-2, and Penn State, 1-0. Michigan was last out of the No.1 spot March 15, 2005 when it checked in fourth.

Arizona has been ranked No. 1 at some point during the regular season in either the ESPN.com/USA Softball or the older NFCA poll since 1992, the year following the Cats' first national championship. The NFCA poll comes out on Wednesday. UA was ranked No. 3 in both polls last week after opening the year at No. 5.

All of last week’s top 10 teams reshuffled but stayed in the top 10.

BYU jumped in at No. 25 after receiving votes in last week’s poll while Oregon fell out of the top 25 after a 3-2 showing at the Louisville Slugger Classic.
