TEMPE, Ariz. - The No. 1 Arizona softball team shut out in-state rival Arizona State on Saturday in Tempe, run-ruling the 7 p.m. game in six innings, 8-0. The win saw the Cats' season record climb to 40-1 while remaining undefeated in Pac-10 play. Alicia Hollowell pitched her 27th victory of the year, striking out 10 and bringing her total season strikeouts to 345.

Heading into the fifth with the score tied at zero apiece and just two Wildcat hits in the game, Arizona's offense came to life, touching up ASU's pitchers for six runs and four hits. Samantha Quintero led off the inning with a double up the middle, followed by a two-base single by Allyson VonLiechtenstein, advancing Quintero to third. Caitlin Lowe hit a sacrifice fly to left to bring Quintero home, followed by a bunt single by Autumn Champion.

Wendy Allen reached base on an error, allowing VonLiechtenstein to score. With two on and one out, Mackenzie Vandergeest was intentionally walked to load the bases for the Cats. Kristie Fox drew a walk, scoring Champion to put the Cats up, 3-0. Jackie Coburn, typically a power hitter for the Cats, came to the plate and put down a two-RBI bunt single, scoring Allen and Vandergeest.

Shelly Schultz reached on a fielder's choice, Quintero walked in her second plate appearance of the inning, and VonLiechtenstein reached on an error, allowing Fox to score the sixth and final run of the inning. In ASU's half of the inning, Hollowell struck out the side, preserving her one-hit game.

The Wildcats added another pair of runs in the top of the sixth, when Allen lifted a double over the leftfielder's head. Crystal Farley pinch ran for Allen, reaching third on a wild pitch by Sundevil pitcher Desiree Serrano. Vandergeest then launched a two-run homer over the wall in right center, putting the Cats up, 8-0.

The Cats will hit the road again next weekend, when they head to the Bay Area to take on Stanford and Cal from April 16-18.
