SARASOTA, Fla. - University of Arizona men's tennis player Andres Carrasco powered his way to the finals after posting back-to-back victories in the singles quarterfinals and semifinals today at the Lakewood Ranch Intercollegiate Clay Court Classic in Sarasota, Fla. The senior has posted an outstanding performance in the tournament, playing arguably his best tennis against the nation's top ranked players.

"To be in the finals of an event like this is a huge accomplishment," said head coach Tad Berkowitz. "He is playing well enough to win the tournament and I look forward to the championship match tomorrow."

In the Quarterfinals, Carrasco breezed past Florida's No. 105 ranked Bob VanOverbeek, winning by default. In his second match of the day in the Semifinals, the Cabrils, Barcelona, Spain native battled No. 113 ranked Finn Tearney of Pepperdine in a three-setter. Carrasco clinched the first set 6-3, fell 4-6 in the second set, before edging out Tearney 7-5 in the third set.

All of Carrasco's victories after the first round have been against opponents who are nationally ranked. On Friday, Carrasco faced Kurt Mauro of Temple in the first round of competition where he swept in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0 to advance to the second round. The senior then faced No. 96 ranked Carl Sunberg of Miami in a close match where Carrasco edged out Sunberg in a close 7-5 first set victory and then notched a 6-2 second set win to advance to the Quarterfinals.

The Clay Court Classic is the only event in the country where players have the opportunity to play on clay courts, but perhaps that makes no difference to the way Carrasco is playing in the fall season. The senior now holds a 5-3 singles record through three tournaments.

"He's playing well no matter what surface," Berkowitz added. "He's been on the edge of breaking through all fall."

Carrasco will wrap up his final fall tournament of his Wildcat career in the Championship match tomorrow at 9 a.m. EST against No. 111 ranked Sekou Bangoura Jr. of Florida.
