Tucson , Ariz. ?C Freshman Tasha Dickey hit a clutch three pointer late in the second half, and Arizona managed to hold off a scrappy Vanguard team down the stretch for a 76-70 exhibition win on Monday night in McKale Center.

As a team, Arizona shot 43.8 percent from the floor (28-64) and collected 15 steals off of 23 Vanguard turnovers.? The Wildcats only shot 2-of-14 (14.3 percent) from three point range, but outscored the Lions 48-24 in the paint.? Vanguard shot 33.9 percent (21-62) from the field in the game, and was 20-of-23 (87 percent) from the free throw line.

?ˇ?At times we played good defense and at times there were lapses throughout the game,ˇ± head coach Joan Bonvicini said.? ˇ?Iˇ?m glad we were able to get to the free throw line in the second half and make those shots.? We were rushing too much tonight and we need to make better decisions. There are things we need to work on, but we picked up a good win against a quality team.ˇ±

Individually for the Wildcats, senior Ashley Whisonant finished with a team-high 22 points to go with seven rebounds, six steals and four assists.? Junior Amina Njonkou added a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds, and Dickey posted 10 points and two steals.? Junior Sarah Hays collected eight points and six boards.

Arizona started the game off strong, building a 14-6 lead at the 14:31 mark.? The Wildcats had their biggest lead at 24-12 with 9:18 left in the first half, and held a 36-26 advantage with 2:44 left before the half.? Vanguard trailed Arizona 40-30 with 55 seconds left in the first, but the Lions scored five points in the final 30 seconds off of a three by Richter and a layup by Sarah Boyd to go into halftime down only 40-35.? Arizona shot 50 percent (19-38) from the field in the first half, holding Vanguard to a 32.3 percent mark (10-31).

Vanguard rallied in the second half, cutting the deficit to 42-40 at the 16:56 mark.? Arizona led 47-44, but a three by Jaclyn Blied tied the game up at 47-47 with 13:39 left to play and sparked a 9-0 Vanguard scoring run to give the Lions a 53-47 lead over the Wildcats.? Arizona responded with six-straight points of its own to tie the game up at 53-53 with 7:22 left.?

The Wildcats trailed 64-62 with 3:43 left when Dickey drained a three pointer from the left side to give Arizona a 65-64 advantage.? UA held on to the lead from there, icing the game from the line for a six-point win.? Arizona shot 16-of-19 (84 percent) from the free throw line in the second half to make up for a 34.6 percent mark (9-26) from the field, and held Vanguard to a 35.5 shooting percentage (11-31).
