OKLAHOMA CITY - Eight current or former Arizona softball players plus coach Mike Candrea will participate in the first 2002 Team Camp held by USA Softball at the ARCO Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif., Jan. 2-6.

The camp was originally scheduled for October but was rescheduled because of travel difficulties. Fifty of the nation's top women's fast pitch softball players have been invited to participate in the camp.

USA Softball will select a core group of 22 athletes to return to a Team Camp in May from which the 2002 World Championship team will be selected.

The players invited to the January camp are a combination of 2000 Olympic gold medalists, the two USA Softball teams that were fielded in 2001 (USA Red and USA Blue) and other top players from across the country.

Arizona's participants:

1996 and 2000 Olympian Leah O'Brien-Amico

From 2001 USA Red Team - catcher Lindsey Collins, outfielder Nicole Giordano, infielder Lovie Jung, infielder Toni Mascarenas.

From 2001 USA Blue Team - outfielder Lauren Bauer, pitcher Jennie Finch, coach Mike Candrea.

At-large invitation - outfielder Mackenzie Vandergeest.

Collins, Giordano, Mascarenas and Bauer completed their eligibility last May on UA's NCAA Champion squad. Finch will be a UA senior in 2002 and Vandergeest will be a sophomore. Jung redshirted the 2001 season and joins UA as a junior.
