TUCSON, Ariz. ?- Arizona junior right-hander Mark Melancon was selected by the New York Yankees with their ninth round pick in the 2006 Major League Baseball First Year Player Draft. The selection is a 21-round improvement over his 30th-round pick by the Los Angeles Dodgers coming out of Golden High School in Golden, Colo., in 2003.

Melancon, Arizona’s all-time saves lead with 18, went 3-3 with four saves and a 2.97 ERA in 14 appearances in 2006. He missed nearly two months of the season with an ailing elbow.

The right-hander emerged as a dominating reliever in his sophomore season of 2005. Posting an Arizona single season school record 11 saves, Melancon went 4-3 with a 2.58 ERA in 34 appearances. He struck out 69 hitters in 66 1/3 innings while walking only 21.

As a true freshman in 2004, Melancon helped the Wildcats’ run to the College World Series in Omaha, Neb., with a 2-0 record, a 0.00 ERA and two saves in five postseason appearances.
