TUCSON, Ariz. - University of Arizona men's basketball player Mark Lyons has been named to the watch list for the 2013 Bob Cousy Award, which was announced Thursday by the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame.

The list includes 85 student-athletes who are among consideration for the nation's top collegiate point guard award.

A 6-foot-1, 200-pound senior from Schenectady, N.Y., Lyons is averaging 13.9 points, 1.6 rebounds and 3.0 assists per game in nine starts this season. He's scored in double figures seven times and twice this year has passed out five or more assists, including a season-high seven against Oral Roberts on Dec. 18.

He ranks among the Pac-12 Conference leaders in scoring (13.9 ppg/14th), free throw percentage (.865/3rd), assists (3.0 apg/15th), three-point field goal percentage (.415/6th) and assist:turnover ratio (1.1:1/14th).

Through nine games, Arizona is averaging 16.6 assists per game and has had an assist credited on nearly two-thirds of its collective field goals (149-of-234).

The watch list will be narrowed down to 20 around Jan. 1, 10 near Feb. 1 and final five near March 1. A premier selection committee has been appointed by the Hall of Fame to review the final five candidates in contention for the nation's top collegiate point guard award. These Hall of Fame committees are made up of top college basketball personnel including media members, head coaches, sports information directors and Hall of Famers.

Now in its 10th year, the winner of the 2013 Bob Cousy Award will be presented at the Hall of Fame's Class Announcement on April 8 in Atlanta as part of the NCAA Final Four weekend.

The fourth-ranked Wildcats are next in action on Saturday, Dec. 22, against East Tennessee State in the first round of the Hawaiian Airlines Diamond Head Classic in Honolulu, Hawaii. Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m. HST and can be seen on ESPNU.
