TUCSON, Ariz. -
Head coach Vicky Maes and the No. 26 Arizona Women’s Tennis team will open its Pac-12 Conference season at Washington State on Friday, March 16. The match is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. PT.
Despite playing a brutal non-conference schedule in which the team played only ranked opponents, Arizona found great success, garnering a 10-3 record, including a perfect 8-0 mark at home.
The Pac-12 has arguably been this season’s toughest conference in the country, boasting three of the top-five teams in the country and one more in the top 10. UCLA is currently ranked at No. 1, Stanford at No. 3, USC at No. 4 and California at No. 9.
In addition, Arizona stands at the no. 26 spot, Arizona State is at No. 27, Washington at No. 36 and Oregon at No. 68.
Washington State is not ranked in the top 75, but the Cougars’ top singles player, Liudmila Vasilieva, is the NCAA’s No. 43-ranked player.
Arizona sophomore Lacey Smyth (Oceanside, Calif.) stands at the No. 79 spot and has occupied the No. 1 spot for the Wildcats for the majority of the season.
Freshman Hailey Johnson (San Diego, Calif.) has been a consistent contributor at the No. 2 doubles spot with Landsman.
