Tucson, Ariz. (Sept. 5) - Playing in the first game of the Nike Tiger Invitational in Columbia, Mo., on Friday, the University of Arizona women's soccer team was edged by Arkansas, 3-2. The Wildcats slip to 1-2-0 on the year, while the Razorbacks improve to 2-2-0.
The battle was close for the first 29 minutes of the contest, then Arkansas ended the drought in the 30th minute with a header from Christina Burger. Despite out-shooting the Razorbacks, 8-2, for the period, the Wildcats trailed, 1-0, at the half.
At 56:03, junior forward Candice Wilks scored the equalizer for the Wildcats off a give-and-go from freshman forward Lauren Winters. That was Wilks' third goal in as many games. The tie didn't last long, though, as Arkansas' Pam Pesnell sent her team back up by one in the 64th minute off a corner kick.
Arizona answered just a minute-and-a-half later, as freshman midfielder Erin Bevacqua dented the back of the net off a corner kick by sophomore Lisa Kosena which had been brought down by Winters in the 65th minute. The two teams played even for 15 more minutes on the clock, until the Razorbacks managed to get in behind the Wildcat defense to score the game-winner at 79:04.
"We played well enough to get some positive results. We didn't win, though, and that stings a bit," said first-year head coach Dan Tobias. "We have to come out on Sunday and correct our mental mistakes, and I'm confident that we'll do that."
Arizona out-shot Arkansas, 13-6, for the game and had an 8-4 edge in shots on-goal. The Wildcats also had a large 12-3 advantage in corner kicks. Kosena, Wilks and Winters each finished the contest with three shots and registered two shots on-goal apiece. Junior goalkeeper Krystal Werges played the full 90 minutes in the nets for the Cats, logging one save.
The Wildcats remain in Columbia to take on host team Missouri on Sunday, Sept. 7, at 12 p.m. CDT, in the second day of the tournament.
