WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Arizona sophomore outfielder Jeff Van Houten has been named Pac-10 Baseball Player of the Week and Washington junior right-hander Jeff Petersen has been named Pac-10 Baseball Pitcher of the Week for March 11-17, Commissioner Tom Hansen announced today.
Van Houten, from Paradise Valley, Ariz., went 10-for-14 (.714) with three home runs, two triples, seven runs scored and 14 RBI, helping the Wildcats to a perfect 5-0 week with series sweeps over Portland and Wagner. He tallied a .700 on-base percentage and posted an outstanding 1.714 slugging percentage. Against Wagner on Fri., March 14, Van Houten finished 3-for-3 with four RBI and hit Arizona's first inside-the-park home run in over 10 seasons.
Petersen, from Covington, Wash., threw a complete-game, one-hit shutout on Sat., March 15 in an 11-0 win over Cal State Northridge. Petersen, who had never gone further than five and two-thirds innings, needed only 105 pitches to complete the game. He walked one, hit three batters and surrendered a single, but faced only three batters over the minimum. He didn't allow a runner past first base until the ninth when a runner moved to second on a passed ball. Petersen also struck out six in the game.
The Player of the Week honor is the first for Van Houten in his career and the 38th selection all-time for Arizona. The Pitcher of the Week is the first such honor for Petersen, the 27th Husky to earn the weekly recognition.
