Berkeley, Calif. ?- The Arizona women’s tennis team completed its first day of play at Cal’s Nike Invitational, with two of the three Wildcats losing before the day’s end.
Junior Stephanie Balzert defeated Hilary Englert of Cal 6-3,6-4 in the round of 32 to open the tournament. In the round of 16, Balzert topped Texas’ Kendra Strohm 7-6 (3), 6-2 to advance to the quarterfinals. Strohm was the sixth seeded player in the tournament. Balzert will now face Arizona State’s Rebecca Rankin in the semifinals. Rankin upset top-seeded Sasha Podkolzina in the quarterfinal round 5-7, 6-2, 6-2.
Freshman Camelia Todorova won her first round match with a 7-5, 6-3 victory over Washington State’s Zsofia Fodor. Todorova then faced fourth-seeded Susi Babos of Cal 6-0, 6-1. Todorova will now play in the consolation bracket, with her opponent yet to be announced.
Junior Iza Ferreira lost to Cal’s Monica Wiesner 6-1, 6-0 in the first round. Last week, Ferreira won her first round match at Penn’s Invite, before losing 6-0, 6-0 in her next two matches. Ferreira will play in the consolation bracket against an opponent to be announced.
After receiving a first round bye in doubles play, Todorova and Ferreira faced off against Arizona State’s Vana Tomas and Texas’ Kelly Baritot. The pair of Tomas and Baritot came out on top with a 8-5 victory in the round of 16 match. Todorova and Ferreira will have Saturday off in the doubles bracket, before playing in the consolation bracket Sunday.
