TUCSON, Ariz. - The University of Arizona football team will open its 2008 Fall Camp on Monday, August 4 at the Rincon Vista Complex. The practice will kickoff three weeks of preseason training before the Wildcats begin game-specific preparation for the Idaho Vandals, UA's first opponent set to journey to Tucson for each team's season opener at 7 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 30.
This weekend, the Wildcats are welcoming all players back to campus, although most all have been on campus over the summer participating in voluntary summer workouts and completing summer school courses. On Saturday, Aug. 2, all newcomers will report to be fitted for equipment and undergo physical examinations. The next day, Sunday, Aug. 3, the veterans have their turn to report and complete the same process.
Arizona Head Coach Mike Stoops, who is entering his fifth season with the Wildcats, will meet with the media for a pre-camp press conference on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. The Wildcats will then take to the practice field bright and early on Monday morning as they implement a new 6:15 a.m. practice schedule for most of camp. The early practices will allow student-athletes the opportunity to better balance their summer school course schedules with football related duties, and the practices will improve the chances of avoiding monsoon thunderstorms that are tricky to forecast in Southern Arizona this time of year.
Most practices will be open to the public and held at the Rincon Vista Complex, an off-campus practice facility typically used for Fall Camp. Later in the month, the team will venture to Fort Huachuca, just over an hour-long drive south of Tucson for a three-day getaway following the completion of summer school courses. The Wildcats will then return to Tucson for a final week of practice before the conclusion of camp on Saturday, Aug. 23 with Fan Appreciation Day at Arizona Stadium.
