TCU claims team honors at 26-under 838; Arkansas’ Bortis the individual medalist at 12-under par
TUCSON, Ariz. ?- The University of Arizona men’s golf team shot its third consecutive round of seven-under-par 281 total and to tie for third place at the National Invitational Tournament Tuesday at Omni Tucson National Golf Club.
Arizona’s 54-hole total of 843 (-21) placed the team in a tie for third with UNLV. TCU continued its dominance of the 14-team field in winning by three strokes after carding a nine-under 279 en route to an 838 (-26) total. Arkansas (841) finished second, while Texas (844) rounded out the top five places.
Arkansas’ Matt Bortis claimed individual medalist honors in the 75-man field with a 12-under 204 total. Bortis carded a four-under 68 Tuesday to win the event by one stroke over Michael Putnam of Pepperdine and Matthew Rosenfeld of Texas.
Senior Nathan Lashley led the Wildcat varsity after firing a three-under 69. The Scottsbluff, Neb., native tied for fourth place with a 207 (-9) total. It was his highest finish and second top-10 finish of the season. Sophomores Josh Esler and Henry Liaw both tied for 27th place after posting 214 (-2) totals. Freshman Travis Esway tied for 31st place with a one-under 215 total after carding a final-round 73. Sophomore Nathan Tyler tied for 60th place at 222 (+6) after shooting a final-round 74.
A pair of top-20 individual finishes propelled the Arizona junior varsity to tie for seventh place. Senior Nick Juszczak posted his first top-10 finish of the season with a tie for seventh place at 208 (-8), while freshman Trey Denton tied for 16th place at 212 (-4).
The Wildcat junior varsity got strong performances from Tyler Neal and Brian Prouty, who both tied for 41st place at 217 (+1), while Mark Lamb rounded out the JV contingent with a tie for 60th place at 223 (+7) total.
The 54-hole National Invitational Tournament was contested at Tucson National Golf Club, a par 72, 7,094-yard layout. The Arizona varsity will next be in action on April 8-9 at the ASU Thunderbird Invitational in Tempe, Ariz.
