MALIBU, Calif. ?- In day two of the Wilson/ITA West Regional Championship, the University of Arizona men’s tennis team compiled three victories.

The Wildcats had two of three singles players in the consolation draw advance, gaining victories from juniors Francois VanderMerwe and Bruno Alcala. Alex Labrosse was eliminated from the tournament with a loss to Robert Sabo of San Diego State University.

In the main draw, ninth-seeded Claudio Christen got off to a strong start, winning the first set 6-3 against UCI sophomore Shimpei Suzuki. Suzuki fought back, though, taking the final two sets and the match 6-2, 6-3.

The other remaining singles player for the Wildcats was sophomore Peter Zimmer, who faced the No. 2 seed Chris Surapol of UCLA. Zimmer was unable to come away with the win, losing in straight sets 6-2, 6-1. Surapol, a senior, reached the round of 16 two weeks ago at the prestigious All-American Championships in Tulsa.

Picking up the only main draw victory of the day for the Wildcats was the doubles team of Alcala and Christen, who defeated the University of San Diego’s Levon Brown and Matt Ozurovich 8-3. Alcala and Christen will play in the quarterfinals tomorrow at 10 a.m.
