Two University of Arizona women's basketball players were taken in the fourth round of the 2002 WNBA draft on Friday. Seniors LaKeisha Taylor and Elizabeth Pickney were drafted by the Indiana Fever and the Sacramento Monarchs, respectively.
Taylor, a center who was the first pick of the fourth round and was the 49th pick overall by the Indiana Fever. She averaged 9.6 points and 5.7 rebounds per game for the Cats this year and finished the season ninth in the Pac-10 in field goal percentage (.481). Taylor had six career double-doubles and 28 career double-digit scoring performances, including four of 20 points or better. She is tied for fourth on the UA's all-time career field goal percentage list (.516) and is tied for eighth in career blocked shots (44).
Pickney, a forward, was the 12th pick in the fourth round and was 60th overall, taken by the Sacramento Monarchs. A first team All-Pac-10 choice for the second year in a row, she was the only player to start all 28 games for Arizona this season and was the Cats' leading scorer (16.1 ppg) and second-leading rebounder (8.0 rpg). She finished the season fourth in the Pac-10 in blocked shots (1.21 bpg), fourth in free throw percentage (.834), fifth in rebounding and seventh in scoring. Pickney had 86 double-digit scoring performances in her career and was never held scoreless in any game during her career. She ended her career as Arizona's all-time leader in games started (112) and blocked shots (147) and was second all-time in scoring (1,620 points) and rebounding (736).
Arizona has had players taken in each of the last three WNBA drafts and four of the last five. This year's draft marks the first in which Arizona has had more than one player selected.
