TUCSON, Ariz. - The University of Arizona Wildcat men's golf team is in twelfth place after shooting a 294 (+6) in the opening round of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate in O'ahu. California holds a four-stroke lead at eighteen under.
Junior Juan Pablo Hernandezwas the only Wildcat to shoot under par for the day, finishing the first eighteen holes tied in 22nd place at 71 (-1).
Duke's Julian Suri has the individual lead with a first-round score of 65 (-7). With two players tied for second place, Max Homa and Joel Stalter (66/-6), California sits atop the leader board shooting 270 (-18) for the day. New Mexico's James Erkenbeck is also tied for second place, and the team finished shooting 274 (-14), also for second place. UNLV rounds out the top three after shooting a 278 (-10).
For the Cats, junior Trent Redfern sits in a tie for 36th place after shooting a 72 (E) on the day. Sophomore Erik Oja is a stroke behind Redfern, 73 (+1), and is in a tie for 44th. Competing as an individual, freshman Brendan Redfern is in 49th place 74 (+2), and fellow freshman Tucker Wadkins is four strokes behind at 78 (+6) and tied for 80th. Rounding out the Arizona competitors is Chris Capo, tied at 84th, finished at 79 (+6).
Round two of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate, held at the Turtle Bay Resort's Arnold Palmer Course on O'ahu, begins tomorrow, February 16, with a shotgun start at 8 a.m. (HST).
