TUCSON, Ariz. ?- The University of Arizona women’s soccer team had its four game winning streak snapped by defending national championship Portland. The fifth-ranked Pilots shutout the Wildcats on their way to a 2-0 victory.

Arizona spent most of the game on the defense as Portland out shot the Wildcats 17 to six. Megan Rapinoe gave Portland a 1-0 lead at the 16:58 mark. This was only the third time all season that Arizona did not scored in the first half.

Sophomore Gianna DeSaverio led the Arizona attack with three shots. The Wildcats, however, did not put a lot of pressure on Pilot goalkeeper Cori Alexander as they only tallied one shot on goal.

“We didn’t have many good opportunities to score,” said Head Coach Dan Tobias. “A lot of that has to be credited to Portland, but at the same time we need to take better care of the ball.”

Chelsea McIntyre had three saves in the game, while facing five shots on goal.

Arizona was able to hold Portland scoreless for 60 minutes and 39 seconds before Portland’s Kendra Chandhoke found the back of the net at the 77:37 mark to make the final score 2-0.

“We’re progressing really well for a young group,” said Tobias. “This will certainly help us down the road. We need to regroup, get rested and come out and play a better game against BYU on Monday.”

Arizona, which fell to 6-3-0 on the season, will be in action again on Monday, Sept. 25 when it travels to Brigham Young for an 8 p.m. (MST) game.
