PULLMAN, Wash. - The No. 25 University of Arizona volleyball team topped Washington State, 3-0, Saturday evening in Pullman, Wash. to snap a three-match skid and improve to 4-5 in the Pac-10 Conference.
Cursty Jackson led the Wildcats with 11 kills while adding three blocks. Senior setter Paige Weber recorded 31 assists and Tiffany Owens posted her seventh straight double-double going for 10 kills and 10 digs.
In the first set, the Cats opened play with an 11-1 run fueled by several WSU errors and a couple Owens aces. The Cougars clawed back though and cut the lead to five before UA went on another run to close out the first set, 25-16. Weber recorded eight assists in the first set while Jackson had four kills to open the match.
The Cougars got off to a quick start to open the second set, running out to a 7-3 advantage. Arizona responded however, moving ahead to lead 15-13 mid-way through. The lead increased to seven after a Kaylen Bannister block made things 23-16. Then UA took the set and a 2-0 lead in the match after a kill from Courtney Karst closed out the rally.
Leading 15-12 in set three, the Wildcats wrapped up the match, closing out the set 25-20 with Jackson tallying four kills and a block and Weber dolling out 12 assists.
With the win, the Cats improve to 15-7 overall and 4-5 in league play while the Cougars fall to 6-13 overall and 0-9 in the conference.
Next weekend, Arizona will head up the 10 freeway to face rival Arizona State in the back half of the State Farm Territorial Cup. If the Wildcats should win, UA would receive its first point in the 2010 Cup standings.
