TUCSON - Boston College hung on to beat Minnesota, 4-2, in Saturday's final action at the NCAA Region 1 Softball Championships and remain alive in tournament play.
Boston College scored a couple of runs in the first, the second unearned. Jennifer Asbury singled, moved to second on Cara Blumfield's single, then after two outs, both scored on Erin Mackey's single when the cutoff throw sailed wide at third.
The Eagles added another run to make it 3-0 in the bottom of the second. Elyse Meredith singled, then raced home when Elena Ferrera bounced a ball off the centerfield fence back toward the infield for a double.
Minnesota cut into the lead with an unearned run in the top of the third.
Stephanie Sward led off with a walk and stole second. With two outs,
Veronica Roberts singled to second and the second baseman threw the ball
away, allowing Sward to score from third.
The Gophers trimmed it to 3-2 when Rachel Keeney singled in the fourth, moved up when Andrea Smith was hit by a pitch, and scored on a single by Piper Marten. But Smith was caught in a rundown on the play to end the rally.
BC answered quickly with an unearned run when Lisa Field reached second on an error by the left fielder, and scored on a single by Elena Ferrera.
Winning pitcher Tekae Malandris gave up six hits and struck out 12 to improve to 13-9 and boost the Eagles to 35-21. Minnesota fell to 37-21. Losing pitcher Piper Martin dropped to 21-13.
Boston College Coach Jennifer Finley:
"It was a great win, not just for our team, but for our institution. We've never made it this far before. Minnesota was a great team, but our team just came out and played well and Tekae pitched a fine game."
BC's: Tekae Malandris:
"It was a great win for us. It took a team effort, our defense picked me up and my catcher played great for me."
Minnesota Co-Head Coach Lisa Bernstein:
"Wrong day for us to have a bad day. We didn't play well enough today to win. BC played well and they won."
UM's Piper Marten:
"They executed a little better than we did when they had runners on base. They got them in and we didn't."
