TUCSON, Ariz. ?- The Arizona softball team shut out the Hum-Babe Cats and Central Arizona College on Sunday at Hillenbrand Stadium. Junior pitcher Alicia Hollowell tossed her second no-hitter in three outings versus Central Arizona, and junior Shelly Schultz had eight RBI over both games.
All eight of the Cats’ runs in Arizona’s 8-0 defeat of Hum-Babe came via the long ball. Schultz homered in the first with one on to put Arizona up, 2-0. Sophomore catcher Cortney Nix followed suit in the second, with a two-run shot over the left field wall. Schultz went yard again in the third to left center with a runner on to give the Cats a six-run cushion. In the fourth, sophomore leadoff hitter Caitlin Lowe put one over the right center fence with Nix on to end the game early.
Junior Leslie Wolfe pitched five shutout innings for Arizona in a one-hit performance. Wolfe struck out seven of 18 batters faced.
In the Cats’ second game of the night versus Central Arizona, Hollowell pitched a near-perfect game, allowing no hits and just one base runner in Arizona’s 6-0 victory. Hollowell fanned 17 over seven innings in Arizona’s first game of the fall that was not run-ruled, putting her fall strikeout total at 45.
Once again Schultz led Arizona’s offense, driving in a run in the first with a bases-loaded sacrifice fly to center. She struck again in the fifth with a three-run shot to left center, giving Arizona a four-run lead. Schultz went four-for-five on the day with eight RBI three runs.
