 Sophomore Josh Esler finished tied for second individually


TUCSON, Ariz. ?- The University of Arizona junior varsity men’s golf team shot a 16-over par 304 total and finished in fourth place Tuesday at the Anteater Invitational in Laguna Niguel, Calif.


No Arizona golfer shot better than par in Tuesday’s final round as the Wildcats posted a three-round total of 903 (+39). The 54-hole total was the Arizona junior varsity’s highest aggregate of the season. UA finished in fourth place, 11 strokes behind tournament-winner San Jose State.  UC-Irvine (902) and UCLA-B (902) tied for second place, while Pacific (916) rounded out the top five places in the field of 10 teams.


Leading the way for Arizona individually was sophomore Josh Esler.  Esler shot an four-over 76 Tuesday and finished in a tie for second place with a 219 (+3) total.  Freshman Trey Denton shot a one-over 73 and finished a tie for ninth place at 225 (+9).  San Jose State’s David Kim captured individual medalist honors with a two-under 214 total.


Brian Prouty carded a four-over 76 to tie for 15th at 227 (+11).  Mark Lamb and Ben Marsh finished tied for 30th (234) and 45th (243), respectively, after final rounds of 79 and 85.


The 54-hole Anteater Invitational concluded Tuesday at El Niguel Country Club, a par 72, 6,962-yard layout.  The Wildcat varsity will next be in action, March 18-20, at the Hall of Fame Invitational in Houston, Texas.
