FEDERAL WAY, Wash. -

Arizona Women’s Swimming kicked off the first night of the 2012 Pac-12 Championships in strong fashion on Wednesday.

The Wildcats finished third and fifth in the 200 medley relay and the 800 freestyle relay, respectively.

In the 200 medley relay, juniors Lauren Smart (Charlotte, N.C.) and Ellyn Baumgardner (Fairfax, Va.) and sophomores Aubrey Peacock (Jacksonville, Fla.) and Margo Geer (Milford Center, Ohio) finished with a time of 1:37.33 in a close race behind Stanford and California.

In the 800 freestyle relay, sophomore Sarah Denninghoff (Tucson, Ariz.) senior Alyssa Anderson (Granite Bay, Calif.), Geer and junior Monica Drake (Bloomington, Ill.) posted a time of 7:06.93.

“We started out with a couple of really strong races, I think it was exactly what we predicted,” Arizona head coach Eric Hansen said. “But we still have a lot of swimming to do, so we will be ready to get back to it tomorrow.”

Arizona returns to the pool on Thursday at 11 a.m. PT with the preliminary round of the 500 free, 200 IM, 50 free, and 200 free relay. The diving portion will feature the men’s 3m and women’s 1m.
