Goldman, Humphreys Advance to Fourth Round

IRVINE, Calif. - The University of Arizona men's tennis players Jay Goldman and David Humphreys each secured singles wins in the consolation draw today on day two of the ITA West Regional Championships on the UC Irvine campus. Goldman and Humphreys both advance to the fourth round and will play tomorrow morning at 9 a.m.   


"We had some matches today that were very hard fought and competitive," said head coach Tad Berkowitz. "Even though we lost some close matches I am proud of the effort today."


After dropping his first match of the tournament yesterday in the round of 64, Humphreys bounced back to clinch a victory in the third round of the consolation draw. The redshirt junior came out with momentum and picked up the win in straight sets, 6-3, 6-1 to advance to the fourth round. Humphreys will face Jenson Turner tomorrow at 9 a.m.


No. 17-seed Goldman battled a tough match against Hawaii's Dmytro Kovalyov in the second round of the consolation draw. The senior edged out Kovalyov 7-6 in the first set and clinched the second set 6-3. In his second match of the day, Goldman bested Matt Tosches of San Diego State University 6-4, 6-2 to advance to the fourth round. Goldman will also square off at 9 a.m. tomorrow when he faces Nils Schive of the University of San Diego.


In other singles competition, Borja Malo fell to UCI's No. 3 singles seed Chris Kearney in straight sets 6-1, 6-2 in the round of 32. The senior sealed victory's in both of his matches yesterday to advance.


No. 12 singles seed Jason Zafiros edged out Pepperdine's Mousheg Hovhannisyan in a first set tiebreak 7-6, but dropped the next two sets 6-4, 6-1 in the round of 32.


Wrapping up singles action in the main draw was No. 17 singles seed Andres Carrasco who faced UCLA's No. 8 singles seed Amit Inbar in the round of 32. Carrasco dropped the first set 6-3, battled back and won the second set 6-1, but fell in a close third set tiebreaker 7-6.


The Wildcats fell in doubles competition after play was delayed a few hours due to inclement weather. The duo of Zafiros and Humphreys dropped their set 8-5 to Cal Poly's pair of Brian Mcphee and Alexander Sonesson.


Freshman Mario Urquidi and redshirt sophomore Tom Wolff suffered a close loss to Drew Jacobs and Jordan Keplar of Cal Poly 8-6.


Senior Geoff Embry and Carrasco received a No. 9 doubles seed and earned a bye into the round of 32, but was defeated by UCI's Jon Kazarian and Stephen Stege 8-4.
