ALBQUERQUE--The Arizona women's tennis competed in the first day of play at the Southwest Collegiate Invite Friday in Albuquerque.
In singles, sophomore Sarah Landsman defeated New Mexico's Laura Richardson 6-1, 6-1 before taking on Oregon's Julia Metzger and won 6-4, 6-4. Tomorrow, Landsman will go up against UTEP's Carolina DeLuca at 10:30.
Senior Ariane Masschelein started off against Oregon's Trudie du Toit, and lost 7-6, 6-4. Tomorrow, Masschelein will take on against New Mexico's Anya Villanueva at 10:30am.
Freshman Elizabeth Hammond dropped both her matches for the day, the first against Northern Arizona's Yumi Hasegawa, who won 6-2, 6-1. In the consolation match, Hammond lost to Oregon's Sabine Fuchs 6-1, 6-0. Tomorrow, Hammond will have a first match bye before taking on the winner of the match between du Toit and New Mexico's Ashley Bonner.
In doubles, Landsman and Masschelein defeated New Mexico's Bonner and Villanueva 8-4.
Play at the Southwest Collegiate Invite continues through Sunday.
