TUCSON - The University of Arizona Wildcat women's tennis team struggled on day one of the University of New Mexico Invitational. The three-day event is being played at the Linda Estes Tennis Complex in Albuquerque, N.M.

"The day started a little slow for our group," head coach Vicky Maes said. "We came out flat in the doubles and got behind early. As a result, neither team was ever able to recover. In singles, we had better individual performances, and I was happy about that, but we still came up short in matches where we could have done better. Tomorrow is another day, and hopefully we will see a more consistent mental effort from everyone."

The team of freshman Kim Stubbe and junior Sarah Landsman lost to the duo from UTEP in doubles play. The doubles team of freshman Susan Mc Rann and junior Debora Castany lost to the duo from Texas Tech.

Landsman won both of her singles matches, the first against NAU and the second against UNM. Stubbe won her first match against Boise State but lost the second against Texas Tech. Mc Rann lost to UTEP in her only singles match of the day. Castany won her first match against UTEP and lost her second to NAU.

Competition at the University of New Mexico Invitational will continue Saturday. For complete event information, visit golobos.com.
