Fall Camp Central

TUCSON, Ariz. - The Arizona football team donned full pads on Tuesday night at Kindall Field/Sancet Stadium, and the resulting physicality produced a glimpse at the pad-popping action that comes on the gridiron each Saturday during the fall.

It was business as usual for the Wildcats on their fifth day of preseason camp, with coaches hammering home the details and fundamentals in individual and group sessions at the start of practice. The intensity again ramped up about a half-hour in with "board drills", the one-on-one battles between at the point of attack from a stance.

As practice progressed and the team came together for 7-on-7 sessions, junior cornerback Shaquille Richardson picked off a Matt Scott pass attempt on the first play. It was one of several big plays made by each side of the ball on Tuesday evening, drawing praise from one set of coaches and concern for the other half.

The final half hour featured scrimmage-like tackling situations, with the offense moving the football down the field and the defense seeking stops. Richardson again intercepted a pass during the segment, but the offense made its share of plays through the air and on the ground with a bevy of running backs.

Even so, head coach Rich Rodriguezaddressed local media members following the practice, saying that he hopes practices in the coming days will be better than what he saw from his squad on Tuesday.

"I've got higher expectations and they have higher expectations of themselves," Rodriguez said. "We'll learn from this one and practice better tomorrow."

The Wildcats will alter their schedule on Wednesday, practice in the morning rather than the evening. The morning workout will allow the team to hit the road later in the afternoon as they head to Fort Huachuca, where they are slated to practice five times over the course of the three days.

The Wildcats will take to Arizona Stadium on Sat., Sept. 1 to host Toledo. The 7:30 p.m. contest will be broadcast nationally on ESPNU. Football tickets are available at the McKale Center Ticket office, by visiting or by calling 520-621-2287 or 1-800-452-CATS.
