SALT LAKE CITY -- The Arizona women's soccer team beat Utah 4-0 in Salt Lake City on Friday night to improve its record to 2-0 on the season.
After last Sunday’s win over Cal Poly, the Wildcats hit the road on Friday in hopes of remaining undefeated. Two minutes into Friday night’s game, the Wildcats took a 1-0 lead and shutout the Utah Utes, who fell to 1-2 on the season.
Forward Renae Cuellar staked the Wildcats to the early lead, netting her first career goal.
“It was a real big play for me as a freshman,” said Cuellar, “The team as a whole did really well.”
Karina Camacho, who scored UA's lone goal a week ago, recorded an assist as she set up Cuellar for the goal.
Arizona took its slim 1-0 lead to the locker room at halftime knowing it may need some insurance in the second half.
“We were struggling in the first,” said sophomore midfielder Karina Camacho, “In the second, we picked up the speed and became more aggressive.”
UA's aggression led to three more goals in the 81st, 86th and 89th minute, giving the Cats a 4-0 lead. Scoring the goals were sophomore midfielder Leila Amini who was assisted by senior forwardLondon King, Camacho, who received a feed from Cuellar. Camacho, the team's leading goal scorer (2) then assisted King, UA's goals leader in 2007 with four, in the game’s final minute for the final goal of the game.
“The team did a solid job,” said head coach Dan Tobias, “It’s good to go on the road for the first time and score early.”
Associate head coach Lisa Oyen added that the way the team played “encouraged a well rounded attack.”
On Monday, the Wildcats will meet BYU in Provo, Utah 4 p.m. MDT.
