TUCSON, Ariz. ?- The No. 24 University of Arizona women’s soccer team defeated Oregon State, 2-0, to split the opening weekend of Pac-10 play. The Wildcats scored in both halves and spent most the afternoon on the attack, out shooting the Beavers 21 to 13.

Oregon State is a very good team and they played a tough overtime match on Friday against Arizona State, which is a tough team as well,” said Head Coach Dan Tobias. “I wasn’t worried about our group (in reference to Friday’s loss). I preached that if we took good care of the ball we would continue to get good chances.”

In the first half, Analisa Marquez got the Wildcats ahead with her first goal of the season at the 33:33 mark. Marquez scored off a give and go with Gianna DeSaverio. Arizona spent most of the half on the attack notching 10 shots. Oregon State had six shots with one shot on goal.

In the second half, DeSaverio scored at the 53:56 mark to give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead. Kaity Heath played a ball long to DeSaverio, and she was able to draw out the goalkeeper and scored from the right side of the box.

Defensively, Chelsea McIntyre had four saves in the game. The back four played strong keeping the Beavers from getting the ball deep. Oregon State had 13 shots in the game.

“I think that we’re obviously in a position that this is another game opportunity to respond to how we played on Friday,” said Tobias.” We took better care of the ball, created better chances and we were tighter defensively.”

Arizona, which improved to 8-5 on the season, 1-1 in the Pac-10, will be in action again at 7 p.m. next Friday, Oct. 13, on the road to take on California.
