LAS CRUCES--Wildcat senior Ariane Masschelein came out on top in singles at the Miner Fall Invite in Las Cruces, New Mexico, defeating New Mexico State's Ginet Pinero 7-6, 6-4 in the final match of the Flight B singles.
On her way to the top, Masschelein fought off NMSU's Natalia Salum 7-5, 6-3 in the semifinal round, after taking down Tarleton State's Carde Julen 4-6, 6-1, 6-2. In the tournament's opening round, Masschelein took down UTEP's Alexandra Glebova 6-2, 7-6(4).
In the 3/4 Place match of Flight B, sophomore Debora Castany defeated NMSU's Natalia Salum 7-5, 6-2 for the third place spot.
Freshman Shannon Cassidy also took third place in Flight C singles, defeating UTEP's Carla Murguia.
In doubles, Masschelein and Castany lost to UTEP's Carolina DeLuca and Veronika Makashov, and Cassidy, with partner Carlia Murguia of UTEP lost in the 3/4 Place match to UTEP's Ximena Fuentes and Austin Lavallii.
Next weekend, the Wildcats will compete in two tournaments, the Cal Invitational in Berkeley, California, and the New Mexico Invitational in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Both tournaments take place on September 25th through the 27th.
