Arizona women’s basketball (3-2) fell to UTEP (4-0), 64-53 in its first game in the Junkanoo Jam in The Bahamas on Friday night.

Senior Davellyn Whyte (Phoenix, Ariz.) led the Wildcats with 19 points, while junior Kama Griffitts (Coeur d’Alene, Idaho) finished with a career-high 10 rebounds.

“Obviously, the outcome wasn’t what we wanted it to be,” Arizona head coach Niya Butts said. “We didn’t get enough stops early in the game and we didn’t get any stops down the stretch.”

In the first half, Arizona outrebounded the Miners, 24-21, but UTEP forced 17 Wildcat turnovers and went in the locker rooms with a 26-17 lead.

UTEP came out strong in the second half, leading by as many as 14 points. Arizona came back within nine, but ultimately could not overcome the deficit and fell, 64-53.

“The story of the game for us was turnovers and when we did have offensive possessions, we couldn’t hit shots,” Butts said. “We missed some pretty easy shots and layups, 15-foot jump shots—we couldn’t get anything going offensively and eventually, that took a toll on us defensively.”

Anete Steinberga led the Miners with 18 points and Kayla Thornton and Chishauna Parker both had 10 rebounds.

Arizona will return to the court on Saturday, Nov. 24 to take on Texas Southern at 2:30 p.m. ET. for its second of two games in the Junkanoo Jam tournament.

The week’s games will not be streamed live, but both can be heard live on KTUC AM 1400. The broadcasts will start 15 minutes prior to tip-off for the pregame show, with Derrick Palmer (play-by-play) and Lisa Salgado (color) calling the action.
