Wildcats Advance to Finals in all Flights

LAS CRUCES, N.M. -- The University of Arizona men's tennis team came out strong Saturday on day two of the Aggie Invitational.  The Wildcats advanced in all flights to compete in the finals Sunday.  Senior Geoff Embry won both of his singles matches today to advance to the finals of the crimson singles main draw at the New Mexico State University Tennis Center, while freshman Mario Urquidi will compete in the finals of the white singles main draw.  Sophomore Jason Zafiros also advanced to the crimson backdraw bracket and he teamed up with Embry to defeat their opponent in doubles competition to advance to the finals Sunday.

 

"I'm very proud of the way Embry played today," head coach Tad Berkowitz said.  "He beat a very strong opponent. We are in the finals of every flight tomorrow so we look to come home

with titles."

 

Embry defeated Orlando Superlano of New Mexico State in two straight sets, 6-3, 6-3 to advance to the semifinals where he downed New Mexico State's No.1 singles player Jim Brouleau 6-4, 6-3. The senior from Phoenix, Ariz. will face Arthur Surreaux of New Mexico State in the finals on Sunday at 1 p.m.

 

In the Crimson backdraw bracket, Zafiros blanked Jean Benoit Belin of Western New Mexico in the first set 6-0 and then came out with the same momentum topping Benoit Belin 6-2 to advance.

 

Urquidi fought hard in the white singles main draw bracket winning two close matches to move on to the finals Sunday.  The freshman from El Paso, Texas squeezed out a tough win against Jake Hendrie of Abilene Christian in three sets, 7-6, 4-6, 7-6.  In his semifinal match Urquidi dropped his first set against Brian Joiner of Abilene Christian 4-6, but bounced back to win the second set, 7-5, and then topped Joiner in the third set 6-3. Urquidi will face Evan Corona-Saunders of New Mexico Sunday in the finals.

 

Sophomore Frank Chen defeated Nick Plum of Abilene Christian in three sets, 6-3, 6-7, 7-6 to advance to the semifinals but fell to Corona-Saunders in a close three set match, 6-2, 6-7, 6-2.

 

Embry and Zafiros defeated Matej Stakne and Armando Morales of New Mexico State in the semifinals of the doubles main draw 8-5 to advance to the finals Sunday where they will face the winner of the match between Patrick Shimmelbauer and Josh Brown of Northern Arizona and Brouleau and Surreaux of New Mexico State.
