The Week's Schedule: The Arizona men's and women's swimming and diving teams willl open the 2001-02 season at home against the Badgers of Wisconsin. The Arizona men's team finished in sixth place at NCAA Championships, while Wisconsin finished in 18th place. On the women's side the Cats finished the 2001 season in fifth place and the Badgers in 19th place.
On the Horizon: Arizona women's swimming finished the 2001 season with two individual NCAA champions in Sarah Tolar and Amanda Beard. Tolar won the 200y freestyle event with the time of 1:45.21 and Beard captured the 200y breaststroke with the time of 2:09.09. Senior All-American Tolar will return to action this year for the Cats, leading the team in the 200 free, the 400 IM and the relay events. For the women's diving squad the Wildcats look forward to having senior transfer Kelley Persinger active this season after redshirting last year. The Arizona men will be led in the water by senior All-American Roland Schoeman. Schoeman placed second in the 100y freestyle (42.58) at last year's NCAAs and third in both the 50y freestyle (19.29) and the 100y butterfly (46.53). Guiding the Cats men's diving squad will be senior All-American Omar Ojeda. Ojeda placed second on the three-meter springboard at last year's NCAAs, scoring 635.95 points. On the 10-meter platform he scored 562.80 points finishing in third place.
The Newest Members of the Wildcats Squad: This year the Cats welcome eight new women on the team and six new men. On the women's side there are two transfer students in Lindsey Highstrom and April Martin. Highstrom comes to the Cats from the University of Nebraska while Martin comes from Rice University. Highstrom and Martin will bring added depth to the butterfly and backstroke events. Six freshman will join the women's ranks, four swimmers and two divers. For the Arizona men, all six newcomers are freshman swimmers. These men will add depth in the IM, freestyle and breastsroke events.
The Wildcats Next Outing: The Arizona men'a and women's diving teams will host Southern California on November 16 at the Hillenbrand Aquatic Center.
