Berkeley, Calif. ?- The Arizona women’s tennis team will send three players to Berkeley, Calif., Oct. 1-3 for the first Cal Nike Invitational. Juniors Iza Ferreira and Stephanie Balzert, as well as freshman Camelia Todorova are scheduled to compete.
Ferreira and Todorova both played at last weekend’s Cissie Leary Invitational in Philadelphia, Pa. Ferreira won her first match of the year, but lost her next two matches 6-0, 6-0. Todorova won her first collegiate match, but lost in the round of 16 to Harvard’s Cindy Chu, Todorova’s doubles partner for the tournament.
Balzert, a transfer from Baylor, opened her season Sept. 17 at the Baylor Invitational, where she won her first match before losing in the second round. In the consolation bracket, Balzert won two matches before falling to Georgia Tech’s Lindsay Stauss in the semifinals.
The Wildcats will join six other teams at the tournament, including three other Pac-10 schools. Arizona will face Arizona State, UC Davis, Sacramento State, Texas, Washington State, in addition to host Cal. Each team, with the exception of UC Davis, was ranked in the Top 40 at the end of the 2004 season.
